Announced Spring, 2007:
KRBC and KTAB-TV are teaming up with the Abilene Chapter of the
Non-Commissioned Officers Association to honor our Armed Forces with a
permanent memorial.
"Today we are announcing plans to build 'Liberty Plaza' here in front of
the KRBC/KTAB studios on South 14th Street," said Gayle Kiger, General
Manager of the stations.
The plaza will be constructed along South 14th street on the
television stations' property between the pedestrian sidewalk and the
station parking lot. It will feature an open plaza with a large inlaid
star displaying the seals of each of the Five branches upon its five
points. Two flag poles will be included for the American and Texas State
Flags along with a sitting area and appropriate landscaping.
The Non-Commissioned Officers Association and KRBC/KTAB are asking
for donations from the community and area businesses for funds,
materials, and labor to build Liberty Plaza.
"The Plaza will honor those who are currently on active duty or
have served in the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard,"
according to Carl Johnson from the NCOA. Johnson says the plaza will
also include a drop off box location for tattered
and used American flags for proper disposal. "Flags, like most articles
made of fabric, are subject to wear and tear," said Johnson. "We want to
provide area residents with a safe location that would be available 24
hours a day to drop off tattered flags for proper disposal. This site
that is being donated by KRBC and KTAB will certainly serve that
purpose."
